1 out of 5 stars Damaged Goods   November 19, 2009
Bruce Kamikubo (Los Angeles, Ca USA)
I've always had a healthy respect for Panasonic. Since the 60s Panasonic was always considered exceptional, right there with Sony. Panasonic microwaves were highly rated and expensive. I couldn't afford them so I got either a Sanyo or Sharp. Now that I can afford higher quality appliances, I decided to get one. I liked the features of the NN-SD997S. The reviews were favorable and the price was very good through Amazon.

The first unit arrived and I quickly set it up and gave it run. I then noticed there was a chip on the top left hand side of the door. Even though it is cosmetic (I'm guessing it doesn't effect the performance or safety of the unit) I felt that I shouldn't spend hard earned money for a damaged unit. Amazon of course accepted the return and sent a replacement unit immediately. No complaints about their return policy or service. The second unit arrived two days after the first was sent back.

Opened the box and immediately checked the door. Guess what? Same damage, chipped trim, same location as the first unit. This one didn't make it out of the box. The packaging seems fine. The first box was in perfect condition. This one seems to have been pushed around a bit but no obvious damage to the exterior. On the first unit I looked in the packaging bag that held the microwave and inside the box. I never found the chipped piece of plastic. It had to be damage from the manufacturer. This one is going back too.

I normally don't write negative reviews, but this is a bit too much for me. I'm not disappointed, I'm not upset, I'm MAD! Not at Amazon, but at Panasonic. It's obvious their quality control has slipped from a position of exceptional to one of buyer beware. I've include pictures of the damaged area. I don't know if they will make it to the product page. Another reviewer stated a chunk of plastic was missing from the trim on their original and replacement units. There is definitely a quality issue here. I am giving the product one star even though I haven't really had a chance to use it. Quality has to be rated and this unit definitely fails to meet the minimum. No unit should leave the factory with obvious physical damage.

Don't know if I will try a third unit or just take the refund. If I do get a third unit, I will update the review (for sure if it too has a chipped door). But in the mean while, I am looking at Sharp microwave ovens again.

5 out of 5 stars You just might fall head over heels in LOVE with this one!!!   November 15, 2009
One Tree in the Forest (Del Rio, Tennessee, USA)
This microwave almost seems "overbuilt", even though it weighs about 1/2 as much as my original Plastic woodgrain covered 600W Panasonic microwave from 1974 (that cost $600 new). I still have that old Panasonic, with a stainless steel cavity--which makes more sense to me than a painted cavity and a stainless steel exterior. I have relegated that old one to sterilizing starting soil for my greenhouse and other things garden related. Until recently I was using two 700W GE microwaves (also old, 1988 and 1990) until one burned out. When I started to shop for a replacement I only considered Panasonic and GE models. I usually research "long term" purchases very thoroughly, and this was no exception. I got GE's annual catalog that has really good comparison charts for all of their microwaves. Panasonic did not have a catalog, but had relatively good descriptions and comparison charts that could be printed off the internet. I compared everything (except price which is my usually my last considered criterion and in this case was $200. maximum tax and shipping included). I numbered the ones I liked best as 1, going down to 3. Lower than that I just crossed out. I didn't get any 1's in the current GE models although there were some very good ones. I had more 1's and 2's than cross outs in the Panasonic pages I printed out. Then I really got down to hard core comparing and this one, Panasonic NN-SD997 was the only one that got a 1+ after my last review of the #1's. THEN I looked at the price and was frustrated big time. Panasonic is selling it for $279.95 (and it is on backorder). Amazon is my first choice of supplier because of savings on tax and shipping. I was pleasantly surprised (actually astonished), Amazon was selling it for $196.96. I ordered it instantly!!! THIS IS A WONDERFUL UNIT, and a purchase I cannot imagine regretting. Many microwaves seem to die from keypad failure, something I've never experienced. (One Sanyo microwave I killed and replaced with the second GE had a failed magnetron (precisely timed immediately after that part's warranty ended). THIS UNIT HAS NO KEYPAD!!! It has a convenient minute/second dial (knob). There are some multi-function buttons for various features (like power output) and all the directions are easy to understand and LOGICAL. The cavity is huge, and if you have not had a microwave more powerful than 1000W stay near it for awhile while you're getting used to it. I've used microwaves over 35 years and I almost started a fire (not in the oven, in the garbage can where I put the smoldering food!). For best results do not place food in the center of the carousel, but rather with the item's center about halfway from the edge and the middle. Even heavy casseroles placed in that way do not cause the carousel to "derail". There are 2 things about this unit that I strongly dislike. I knew about one before the purchase: This unit does not beep periodically/repeatedly every several minutes after the cooking time is over. This one gives you 5 beeps at the end of the time, and that's it. I sorely miss the reminders, but I did not think it would make any difference. The other thing I don't like is the visibility into the cooking chamber. It is nearly impossible to see what is in it, let alone allowing the user to see how the food is doing. The best viewing is on my 600W Panasonic, with the 700W GE's being only a little less good. I think perhaps as microwave ovens became more powerful it was necessary to provide the user with more protection from the actual microwaves that are produced. The instruction booklet is very thin because this microwave's usage is so intuitive and convenient it is nearly self-explanatory. I WOULD BUY THIS UNIT AGAIN AND RECOMMEND IT TO OTHERS.

5 out of 5 stars Works great!   November 13, 2009
Morbius (St. Louis, MO USA)
We've had this microwave for a few weeks now, and we like it much better than the GE that we had before. The Panasonic has a larger capacity, is much quieter, and we really like the inverter technology for cooking. We also bought the 27" "built-in" kit, which was also far better than the one for the previous GE microwave.

3 out of 5 stars Not A Consistent Cooker   November 5, 2009
Allen Shane (N little Rock, AR USA)
I did some research on this model, but most were very positive. This model is not consistent cooker. It's either too much or not enough. This model does pop popcorn very well. Lots of unpopped corn or it's badly burned in the middle.

Since this is a more powerful unit than we had before, there's a good chance we just haven't learned how to operate this unit.

If I had to buy again it wouldn't be this model.

5 out of 5 stars Panasonic Microwave   November 4, 2009
Anna Marie Anderson (Dickson, Tennessee United States)
This microwave replaced my Sharp, which was 20+ years old. Purchased it based on the good reviews. It has worked great--cooks faster than my Sharp did because it is 1200 versus 800 watts. Popcorn turns out well, with some kernels uncooked, but it is not burned which is more important to me. After getting used to the knob and buttons, I like almost as well as the touch pad. Cooks food evenly. Too early to tell if it will remain reliable long-term, but to date I am very pleased. It is attractive as well.
