3 out of 5 stars Good but....   November 5, 2009
T. Foulke
This is a great unit and a fairly easy to personalize your display via Aluratek's web site....HOWEVER it does not support Flash Player. I streamed a couple great stations for about a year but then they stopped and they no longer showed up on the extensive built in Radio listing. According to Aluratek's Tech support the two radio stations are now using Flash Player for streams and the radio does not support it. Bummer!

5 out of 5 stars Great value for the money   October 18, 2009

I have had this unit for a month.Paid $109 for it.First thing you want to do is upgrade the firmware.Mine came with R1.17.Go to website and navigate to the downloads for your particular model and download the .bin file to your usb drive. The site does not inform you what revision level the bin file is,but you can rest assured that it is higher than what shipped on your unit.My upgrade was up to R1.37.Plug in your usb stick and navigate to the firmware upgrade screen and it takes only a couple of minutes.
Most of the complaints I read about in the earlier posts seem to be resolved now. There are backlight brightness and ontime options now.The Aluratek-vtuner website let me set up my favorite web stations into user friendly groups that work well for me.As an experiment I found an internet radio station not on the vtuner list.I put it on the station add list and it showed up quickly.
The usb input is really the feature that clinched this unit for me.I listen to longer mp3 files other than music and its nice to be able to do this. Its a lot more convenient than firing up my PC to listen out loud. Not to be confused with a home entertainment center but a nice little "clock radio" with lots of nice features for the price.

2 out of 5 stars Unresolved technical problem   October 16, 2009
J. Cuddeback
The radio was easily set up and the instructions were clear. While the radio was recognized by the wireless router and network, as could be seen from the clock synchronizing on local time, it was not recognized by the Aluratek website. This is unfortunate since the use of the radio is dependent on connecting to the servers that provide the conduit to the streaming stations. Apparently the MAC address of the unit was not recognized. After an hour on the telephone with a fairly knowledgeable tech support person who tried various things that I had already tried he gave up at a loss. Further email contact with the tech support confirmed that my radio MAC address was not registered and that the Engineering Department was working on it. That is the last I heard from them.

The unit was returned to Amazon. It is also worth noting that the clock light is quite bright and cannot be adjusted lower (only to off). So as a bedside clock radio you might find it a bit too bright if you like a dark room to sleep in.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Customer Service   October 13, 2009

I'm really excited about the idea of an internet radio (and not having to lug my laptop into the bathroom). I bought this product so I could listen to radio stations in german and french all over my house. I thought this would be an awesome way to practice my language skills. After setting it up, the device kept saying 'unable to receive IP'. I moved the device several times, even placing it right next to my router. It still didn't pick up the signal. I called Aluratek and Norman, the customer service representative with a South Asian accent, suggested I download the firmware (update the driver). While I was navigating my way to the website to get the correct file, Norman suggested that he call me back. I asked him to please give me a few minutes because their customer support is incredibly hard to get on the phone. After a minute, he simply hung up the phone. I called back immediatley. But they were closed (even though it was 30 minutes before their official close time.) Over the next few days, Norman (seemingly their only service representative, would give me a hard time and even suggest I was lying). At that point I decided the best thing to do would be to send the product back. If he acted that way towards a new customer, I could only imagine it would be worse in the future. If you are interested in this product, I suggest you check with the Better Business Bureau's website about Aluratek before you even risk your hard earned hundred bucks. I will not be purchasing anything from this manufacturer ever again.

2 out of 5 stars Cleaver & useful idea - Not ready for prime time   October 13, 2009
Tony (Virginia)
The basic functions of this "Radio" are fine; the problems are in the features and glitches due to buggy Firmware. I have been in contact with help desk twice and they sent me two Firmware updates to solve major problems: 1) backlight does not turn off or dim, 2) Random and frequent changing of date and time on display.

On the positive side, I can tune in BBC world service and listen to many Jazz and classic music stations from all over the globe.

Finally, I gave-up and returned this radio and would not recommend it.
