5 out of 5 stars Great clock. Better looking in person.   November 11, 2009
dash-o
I seem to loose track of time while playing video games. I have a PS3 and even tough it has a built-in clock, stopping to check it while playing online is not going to happen. I got this Sony ICF-C414 clock sitting next to it so that I can take a quick glance when needed. It works like a champ, and is very good looking with a flat front that hides the buttons and knobs.

I do have a negative to point out. I have a large window above the TV that makes this clock virtually unreadable during the day. The light coming in the room is bright, but the display is dim even at the highest setting.

The clock has met my maintenance expectations as it self adjusts to daylight savings time. The time was set out of the box so all I've had to do to it, aside from fiddling with the brightness setting, was to plug it in and walk away.

Overall, I would purchase again even with the deficiencies.

5 out of 5 stars a good purchase   November 7, 2009

I was pleasantly surprised how nice this clock radio is for very little money. I did not need all the bells and whistles some come with...just a attractive, inexpensive clock radio with a decent sound. The big numbers are a plus. It was exactly what I was looking for.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but annoying "snooze"   November 6, 2009
anonymous
Everything about this alarm clock radio is better than my old unit, from it's looks, to the radio quality, to the LED color, to the auto time set thing,
but the snooze...

My old unit (Soundesign 3646 BLK) had this touch sensitive bar that you could just graze with any part of your skin. I liked this because I could just haphazardy flail at the top surface and it'd go into snooze. It gave 9 min per snooze and you could snooze for hours. I abused this function - some days I'd snooze for hours.. eventually the alarm ceased for good, hehe.

Now, the snooze on the Sony ICF-C414, if you hit snooze once it'll give you 10 minutes, twice it'll give you 20, and so on up to 60 minutes. You have to be accurate and precise. I still make erroneous presses after a month.. It's difficult to be accurate and precise when your half asleep and you can't even see the button because the room is dark..

Perhaps the most annoying aspect of this new snooze system is that there's no way to decrease the snooze time. Say you want 10 min but you hit snooze 3 times by accident.. Too bad! Once it's set at 60 that's it... it won't flip back down to 10 no matter how many times you press it. I can't believe the developers didn't enable the snooze time to flip! Shame..

The alarm, for me, took some getting used to as well, but now I like it. My old one was one of the ones that start out low and then quickly become loud and obnoxious (BrAa braAA, BrARAA, BRAaAA!!). The alarm on this unit is just a series of high pitched beeps (bee-bee-bee-beep.. bee-bee-bee-beep..). For about a week I didn't know what was going on when the alarm came on! It confused the heck out of me, lol. But now I'm pretty much used to it and I find it nicer to wake up to than the old alarm.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Clock for the Price   October 21, 2009

This clock is nice to look at and easy to set up. The large numbers for the time are exactly what I was looking for. The sound system on the radio is a little disappointing. However, I hardly use the radio, it's the clock I was more interested in. The adjustable clock light is a nice feature. The back up battery in case of power failure is also a good idea.

4 out of 5 stars Wish it had a digital tuner   October 14, 2009

We searched through dozens of products for a basic alarm clock radio with a large blue or green LCD display. This one had the best reviews, so we went for it. It is great. It is nice to look at and the display isn't blinding in the middle of the night. The only problems I've found are: #1 I'm not pleased with the analog radio (too easy for curious toddlers to switch the station to static!) and #2 it is difficult to find the off button. I always end up hitting snooze (very prominent) or just switching the whole thing off completely. All in all, the best clock radio we've used yet.
