1 out of 5 stars "FAILURE " being the key word!   October 25, 2009
L. Kirkland
I ordered 3 of these lights at once. I followed the enclosed instructions to the letter....very simple...then I turned off the main breaker switch in my house (creating same conditions as a power failure). Two never came on; one came on very briefly (less than 3 minutes) and then went out. Complete failure! I thought I could give it 0 stars, but the lowest you can go is 1. It really didn't deserve any stars. Enough said.

1 out of 5 stars It does not work   September 28, 2009

I purchased this to use when the lights went out. Plugged it in and the light comes on. But when the electricity when off, the light did not stay on, it did not work.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I had in mind.   September 12, 2009

This light is bulky and while it still leaves space to plug in other items and has the added outlet, it still leaves a rather large footprint on the wall.

The other thing I don't like is the giant orange traffic light. That's exactly what this looks like plugged in. I moved it to a rarely used bathroom because I find the looks of it so unattractive, especially at night when it looks like a big, honking round orange light on the wall and no way to disable that function. You can't even say the orange light could function as a night light because it isn't bright enough, in my opinion, just bright enough to be annoying, but not really see anything. When you unplug it or the power goes out, the flashlight function kicks in and that works fine, but lasts less than 10 min.

Right after I ordered this and was disappointed, I ordered a different one and found I liked it much better: Maxxima LED Night Light/Emergency Light/Flashlight even though it takes up an entire outlet, it gives an option for NO light, unless the power goes out, which is what I wanted and it stays lit for hours and hours in emergency/flashlight mode, not minutes (like this Intermatic) and the Maxxima leaves a much smaller footprint on the wall and would be easier to carry around like a flashlight, if need be.

3 out of 5 stars Close but no emergency beacon   May 3, 2009

I ordered and am using 4 of these, but having used Intermatic products for 20 years, I am not impressed. The emergency light given off is not as bright as I would have expected, however, they can fuction similar to the aisle lighting in a movie theatre to at least get one through the hall or garage in an emergency.

3 out of 5 stars A little behind the times   April 26, 2009

We received one of these from my employer (Earth day giveaway, I believe) back in 2000 or 2001. It is supposed to act as a night light while the rechargeable battery inside ensures that, when the power goes off, the night light stays on. When unplugged, it can be used as an emergency flashlight. Additional convenience is provided by its pass through front power outlet.

Many years later, the rechargeable battery is completely dead but I do remember having used it as a flashlight a couple of times in the past. It's still acting as a night light in one of our bathrooms but the light it produces is no longer bright enough to be used on a staircase.

At this time (2009) this item represents old technology. Current LED-based lights that usually turn themselves off during the day are a lot more power efficient. As for emergency flashlights, a wide variety of inexpensive, usually LED-based crank devices are available - we have a few.
