1 out of 5 stars not the easiest   November 18, 2009
Joan Blaha (New York)
I would like to meet the people that love this timer. They deserve the Nobel Prize. I am not an idiot but can't program this twisted beast for anything. Firstly you can't see the screen its so tiny. The timer came with 2 sets of instructions. I tried both. Neither work. There are at least 20 steps and if you make a mistake ( Ha No problem) you have to start over. I used to have an Intermatic rotary timer. It was fine. I miss it.

3 out of 5 stars batteries run flat   November 16, 2009
Ben (Western USA)
I use this item to turn a pond pump on and off according to a schedule. It works well. The only problem is the little batteries that make it tick run flat and I have to buy them. I'd estimate they last no more than 4-6 months and they cost quite a bit.

Besides that, it only holds 4.4 amps. Presently, I'm looking for the same thing on a circuit with an 8.4 amp load -- an electronic ballast. I tried a GE unit that indicates 15A rating. It won't hold the load and shuts itself off after 5 seconds. Nearly all the units I see won't handle electronic ballasts at all or won't handle more than 5 amp loads if the load is an electronic ballast. At least GE unit appears to have internal batteries that apparently last forever.

I might go with the Honeywell which has at least one unit that looks like it can handle 12 amp electronic ballasts, but it's nearly $50!

2 out of 5 stars What the product deescription doesn't tell you...   October 28, 2009
D. Henderson (Los Angeles, CA)
The EJ500C appears to be a versatile and well designed product, but maybe not for everybody. Here are three features which may not please you:
1. I wanted to control a very efficient set of low wattage lights. Too bad, it requires at least 40 watts of incandescent bulbs, and you cannot connect compact fluorescents (CFL's).
2. The switch body is deeper than the previous timer, so it will not fit in my standard 2x4" electrical box. It hits the conduit bushings at top and bottom.
3. If you are under 40 with great eyesight, and you mount the switch in a well-lit location, great. But otherwise, forget about reading the extremely small and dim numbers and words on the screen without a lighted magnifying glass.

5 out of 5 stars Only For Incandescent   September 4, 2009
L. Oslund (San Diego, CA USA)
This is not intended to be a rating but only to provide missing information.

The EJ500C timer is to be used with standard base incandescent light bulbs only! It should not be used to control lighting such as:

* Compact Florescent
* Energy Saver
* Flood lights
* Halogen
* Mercury Vapor
* Christmas lights
* Candelabra bulbs

There is a timer that will control florescent lighting, Digital In-Wall Timer ST01C.
