Best present ever October 5, 2009

I ordered this book for my son-in-law, a mason, for Christmas 2 years ago. Because a story about the author and his work had been shown on CBS Sunday Morning, the book sold out and it had to be reprinted. After months of waiting (well after Christmas), I finally received the book and gave it to him the following Christmas. When he received it, he was blown away by the exquisite portrayals of stone mason works of art. He proclaimed it was "the best present" he's ever received. It was well worth the wait!

I ordered this book after seeing a spectacular stone fireplace in Martha's Vineyard. If you have an affinity for stone, this book is a stunner -- Lew French is an artist by any standards, and the photos are impressive. Now if only I could remember the name for the little openings he created on either side of the chimney -- so convenient for shooting arrows at unwanted visitors!

With spare text and pages of striking photographs, Stone by Design showcases the exuberant craft of the master mason, Minnesotan Lew French. While frequently working outside, on garden structures, walls, ponds, and pathways, he is equally at home working within the confines of a house. His mosaic fireplaces display a design sensibility that manages to capitalize on both the strength and an inherently playful aspect of stone. The conclusion of the book, a lengthy interview entitled The Making of an Artist, reveals a thoughtful and sensitive craftsman, who cites three primary influences in helping "formulate my ideas about stone." Despite their different approaches, architects Frank Lloyd Wright and Antoni Gaudi, and the artist Richard Iammarino, with whom French has collaborated, each serve as inspiration for French's own challenging and innovative twist on stone work.

This was a great book on the stonework that was pictured. My wife does stone work and this has given her many idea's!. Simply a lovely, interesting read and view, and I highly recommend it! The things he does with stone is simply amazing.
